Carpenter in South Bend

When it comes to enhancing the look of a home’s interior, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything that can take a design to the next level like well-designed woodwork.  Trim, mantles, and built-ins are not only pretty to look at, they also often serve a useful purpose, such as storage and seating.  South Bend Handyman & Remodeling provides numerous finish carpentry services, including:
Custom trim:  We install baseboards, chair rail, wainscoting and crown molding that enhance the beauty of your home.

Custom mantles:  Mantles are a beautiful way to dress up a fireplace and provide a shelf for vases, pictures, plants, and other decoration

Storage:  A common complaint of many homeowners is that their homes don’t have enough storage space.  A great way to add storage options while also creating visual interest is through built-ins.  Boot benches, bookshelves, cabinets and shelving can be added to rooms that lack enough place to put things.  Adding storage is also a great way to increase a home’s value.

Cabinet installation:  From full kitchens to bathroom vanities, we can remove your existing cabinets and install new ones.

Advice from the Pros

"There's something extra special about a home with built-ins or other custom woodworking elements.  They're a great way to make a home memorable and unique, and if done well, can add immense value to the property.  We always recommend allocating a part of anyone's remodeling budget to the incorporation of custom woodwork, especially when an owner needs additional storage space." - Owner, South Bend Handyman & Remodeling
What is finish carpentry?
Finish carpentry refers to the installation of all the final touches of a home.  It is one of the last phases to be completed during the building or remodeling process and includes installation of trim, built-ins, doors, bannisters, and anything else needed to finish a home’s interior.

How much does finish carpentry cost?
Every project is completely different. It depends on the price of the materials and the time in takes to build and install the various components.

What are built-ins?
Built-ins are fixtures in a home that permanently remain as part of the structure of a home.  They cannot be moved.  This includes shelving, benches, mantles, cabinetry, bookshelves and furniture that are built into the home, and more.

Are built-ins right for me?
Built-ins and other custom woodworking features are popular in really every design style, from Craftsman, with its loads of handcrafted wood, to modern with its sleek shelves seemingly built right into the wall.  Outside of luxury homes, very few built-ins generally come standard with a home, which is why people often decide to install them as part of a remodel or other home improvement project.
When trying to decide if built-ins are right for your home, it’s important to consider a few things:
  • The cost: Depending on their size and complexity, built-ins can be expensive, easily costing thousands of dollars.  Smart planning and placement will allow you to get your money’s worth.  Also, remember that built-ins generally add value to a home, which can offset their cost down the road.

  • Their permanence: Once installed, built-ins are extremely difficult to relocate, so it’s key to consider changes that may come in the future that would require you to move or alter them.  For example, framing a TV in may look nice now, but what happens if you want to buy a bigger TV later?  Also, if you have plans to change the room at some point, say from a bedroom to an office, what you install in the room will need to take that in to account
